BBC iPlayer on PS3 outside of UK

I have tried a few different proxy servers and VPN's to access both UK and US based TV on demand services but wanted to use the PS3 to access the BBC iPlayer.  If you want to access the BBC iPlayer and other TV on demand services then read on.

Basically you need a connection to a VPN server and software to set up a proxy server on a PC/Laptop, you then connect your PC/Laptop to the VPN server and configure the PS3 to use a proxy running on your PC/Laptop.
First the VPN, I am trying WiTopia, the PersonalVPN SSL package costs $59.99 per year and allows you to connect to various servers, including UK and US based servers (note: The cheaper package is not suitable to achieve iPlayer on the PS3):-

Once purchased you will end up with some software to download that will connect to the VPN, the readme displayed at the end of the installation explains how to use the software.  Basically run the software as administrator and then right click on the system tray icon and select server to connect to.

Now you need to install a proxy server on your PC/Laptop, I am using PS3.ProxyServer:-

Unrar the archive and extract the main folder, then run PS3.ProxyServer.GUI.  Select PS3 mode and enter the IP of the computer (you can find this in the status of your network connection, view details).

On the PS3 you will need to change the connection settings to use a proxy server, under network settings, go through the connection settings, selecting manual setup and under proxy select use.  Then enter the IP of the computer running PS3.ProxyServer and port 8080.

You should now be able to go to iPlayer under TV and start watching BBC content.

On a number of occasions the iPlayer came up with a message about firmware, refreshing the page or going back and selecting the video again solved this problem.

So far this setup seems OK, it can be a bit flaky but as my broadband connection is only 2meg and this is the minimum recommended for the iPlayer, I can't expect perfect.  Remember your internet traffic is now being routed via a server so it will affect download speeds.  Like I said, it is OK and is better than nothing.

Points to note
  • WiTopia offer a full 30 day money back guarantee, so if your not happy with the service ask for a refund
  • Once connected to a server you need to disconnect that server before attempting to connect to another server
  • From your computer you will be able to access other on demand services, ie. 4OD, ITV and by connecting to a US based server you will be able to access FOX, NBC, etc. on demand services
  • I have not tested the effect this setup has on online gaming, I would suggest disconnecting the VPN connection when playing online but remember the computer will still need to be on and running the proxy server as all internet traffic for the PS3 will go through it

Although I have not tried it apparently you can use iPlayer on the Wii as well, this setup should work for the Wii as well.

  3. Thanks for the article Andy . I don’t see BBC iPlayer coming to my country anytime soon. However, there are plenty of workarounds available to access it here in country. Personally, I use UnoTelly for more than a year and I can access BBC iPlayer like I am in UK.
